Data cleaning is fixing the mess inside records you already have so that software can actually use them: blank fields, entries that just say N/A, dates and phone numbers typed five different ways, names shouting in all capitals, stray spaces on the end. Nothing new is added and nothing is merged. The same information is simply made consistent.
