Environment Variable
An environment variable is a named value supplied to a process through its execution environment. Applications use these values for configuration, including references to credentials. In Node.js, environment values are text and need deliberate parsing. Moving a secret out of source code does not automatically encrypt it or prevent exposure through logs or client builds.
