Detecting failures and choosing an appropriate response, such as stopping, correcting input, retrying a safe operation or requesting review. Different failures need different treatment. A rejected request, a temporary read failure and an uncertain write outcome are not interchangeable, and catching an exception does not mean the underlying task succeeded.
