DDoS Attack
A DDoS attack, short for distributed denial of service, is when a huge number of machines flood your website with fake traffic at once so real customers cannot get through. Nothing is stolen, the goal is simply to knock you offline, sometimes for extortion and sometimes out of spite. The defense is a large network sitting in front of your site that soaks up and filters the flood.
